Corning-Painted Post High School Senior Wins 36th Annual Ernie Davis Scholarship of $15,000

Sadie Beres, a senior graduating from Corning-Painted Post High School, has been chosen as the 36th recipient of the Ernie Davis Memorial Scholarship. She was honored at a ceremony at the Ernie Davis Statue. Sadie will receive a total of $15,000 over four years, to be used toward her college tuition and expenses.

Sadie is a two-sport athlete who participated in cross-country and track and soccer throughout high school. She is a member of SOAR Running Club, participates in FIRST Robotics, and volunteers with several nonprofits like the Red Cross, Girls on the Run and Salvation Army.

Sadie will study biology in college next year with a goal of becoming an orthopedic physician in the future. For her project, Sadie created a slideshow to spread the word about Ernie Davis’s Legacy. She presented at the Corning-Painted Post Middle School and the Alternative School for Math and Science during Black History Month.

Sofia Scouten named the 2024 Marty Harrigan Scholarship Recipient

Established in 2005, the Marty Harrigan Scholarship is an award given to students who went above and beyond the call of duty in spreading the word about Ernie Davis, a nationally recognized football player who played for Coach Harrigan during his years at Elmira Free Academy.  Nominees for the Ernie Davis Scholarship are automatically eligible for the Marty Harrigan Scholarship, and the same committee selects both recipients. Sofia will receive $10,000 and it will go toward her tuition and expenses at University of Vermont.

For her project, Sofia created a video aimed at showcasing Ernie’s 6 Pillars of Character. She discussed the highlights of Ernie’s life and career and how he continued to show character throughout life’s trials. She then included a link of her video to hundreds of NYSPHAA coaches to share with their athletes.

Sofia will graduate from Corning-Painted Post High School and will study biology and environmental sciences at college next year. Throughout High School, she has run for cross country and track and is also the class President. She participates in FIRST Robotics, serves on the Youth Activation Committee and volunteers for Wineglass events and in local nonprofits.

Additionally, Joy Morey will be awarded a $2,000 Ernie Davis Project of Excellence Award for her submission.
