Hugh Gregg Elementary School Students Help Corning Area Seniors
In what is now a 21 year tradition, the students, teachers and staff at CPP’s Hugh Gregg Elementary School made their annual “Blizzard Bag” donation to Corning Meals on Wheels on Dec 22nd. The school donated 300 colorfully decorated bags of non-perishable food for Corning Meals on Wheels volunteers to deliver to area seniors for use on days when deliveries are canceled due to bad weather. Corning Meals on Wheels Executive Director David Smith, said, “The blizzard bag donation is a highlight of the season for us and the 145 homebound and frail older adults we serve. The blizzard bags ensure our vulnerable seniors have a meal when the weather makes it too dangerous for our volunteers to deliver.”
Teacher Danielle Perry coordinated the month-long Blizzard Bag effort, capped by the donation on the 22nd. Along with the Blizzard Bags, the school’s principal, Ann Collins, presented Corning Meals on Wheels with additional funds raised. Between students and staff over $1500 was raised. Smith said, “The money donated will provide nearly 200 freshly prepared hot meals for seniors in need over this holiday season.”
